Billie Eilish Releases New Music Video for "you should see me in a crown"

CHANDELIERS, GANGSTA SWAG, AND DAUNTING PIANOS COULD MEAN NOTHING ELSE BUT A NEW PROJECT FROM 16-YEAR-OLD SINGER, BILLIE EILISH. ON JULY 24TH, EILISH RELEASED HER FOURTH MUSIC VIDEO OF 2018 AND HER SECOND OF THE SUMMER WITH HER LIVE VEVO LIFT PERFORMANCE OF THE NEW, THEATRICAL SINGLE "YOU SHOULD SEE ME IN A CROWN."
In this video, Eilish is seen dramatically dancing around an empty mansion. The video begins in a white, pristine room with the notable, aforementioned chandelier hanging in the back. Eilish then moves to an oversized bathroom scattered with multiple sinks throughout the room. Her band is performing and providing backing vocals and the open doors to the balcony cause the curtains to flow with the wind. The calmness of the curtains being caught in the wind partnered with the erratic dance moves Eilish displays creates a distinct juxtaposition.
The video seems to hit you over the head with a designer baseball bat letting you know extravagance and wealth are central themes. Between both of her band members wearing thousand dollar Balenciaga sweaters and the clearly affluent set pieces scattered through a relatively empty house, the wealth is overwhelming. While Eilish is dancing between two sinks, elevated on a pedestal of sorts, an enormous stack of cash sits in the center of it all. At the end of the video, Eilish climbs on top of the money with a dominating presence -- whether this means she's owning up to this expansive wealth or standing morally above it is a bit unclear.
However, Eilish seems to be slightly aware that the extravagance is a tad bit overbearing. This is seen through the contrast between pristine luxury and morbid lyrics such as " Tell me which one is worse / Living or dying first / Sleeping inside a hearse." Even Eilish's outfit could represent a meaningful clash; she sports what appears to be designer sneakers along with knock-off Louis Vuitton shorts.
As part of the Vevo LIFT program, Eilish released an exclusive live performance in the form of this video. LIFT describes the program as "connecting today's rising stars to audiences around the globe with original creative content." Other artists who have been featured in the past include Alessia Cara, Halsey, and Khalid. Though this video is described as a "live performance" there seems to be nothing live about it. Whether it is choreography of the one take, no cut format, the vocals sounding perfectly crafted and no extra sounds of breaths, or her metal jewelry jingling -- all of it lacks the rawness of live music. This video is the first of many exclusive videos to come through Eilish's partnership with Vevo LIFT, perhaps serving as buildup for her next album.
The biggest take away from "you should see me in a crown" is the way Eilish continues the early days of her reign over pop music with the accompanying video. It's only a matter of time before she'll be making her fans bow down, one by one by one.
