Zedd Drops New Breakup Anthem "Happy Now"

BY WILL HEFFERNAN

ICONIC PRODUCER AND DJ, ZEDD, HAS PARTERNED WITH RISING SINGER ELLEY DUHE FOR AN UNDERSTATED BREAKUP ANTHEM TITLED "HAPPY NOW."

"'Happy Now' is the most organic sounding song I've made in a long time. The majority of what you hear was recorded using real instrumentation, a lot of pianos and a lot of guitars," the Grammy winner, Zedd, told Variety. "Lyrically, it's a song that is both happy and sad at the same time, while musically, it's a song that rather leans towards a happier, sunnier side."

The track opens with a simple guitar line that eventually leads into an equally groovy and sassy dance. It's much different than what most DJ's and EDM artists put out today since minor chords mix together with major chords and tones. The energy of these minor chords and the guitar makes the song feel more meaningful rather than just giving off big dance anthem vibes. Once again, the consistent guitar tones bring different emotions to the song, making it more heartfelt.

Instead of going into that generic big drop bass chorus, the song follows a consistent beat as Duhé croons into the chorus when she sings, "You're a world away, somewhere in the crowd / In a foreign place, are you happy now? There's nothing left to say, so I shut my mouth / So won't you tell me, babe / Are you happy now?" Appropriately so, the lyrical themes are drenched in loneliness and nostalgia.

Duhé told Variety that, "'Happy Now' is more than just a song. It's a significant moment in my life, the golden opportunity to work with one of the greatest DJ’s/producer of our time. Being able to come together with complete strangers and to do something beautiful, sing something meaningful, to share something special is what 'Happy Now' is all about. Thank you to everyone involved in making this song and for letting me be part of your world."

This song follows Zedd's previous smash hit, "The Middle," which features country artist Maren Morris. It is also Duhé's first major collaboration. Duhé has released a few singles, and was even a former Voice contestant. She is known for a few viral hits such as "Fly," "Immortal," and "Lost My Mind." Hopefully, "Happy Now" will put Duhé on the radar for other artists to collaborate with her in the near future because her voice is a gem that shouldn't be lost along many and forgotten.
