Shawn Mendes Drops Two Strong Singles From Upcoming Album
BY WILL HEFFERNAN
Shawn Mendes is back with two brand new songs. The first is titled, "In My Blood" and the other is "Lost in Japan." Both tracks were released one day apart from each other, and each song is incredibly deep and emotional. The best part about them, though, is that they are both polar opposites. Here’s why:
"In My Blood," is about a relationship that is going south and things are getting complicated, yet you don’t want to give up on that person, because you’re in love with them so much that it hurts. You don’t want to give up because it’s "in your blood" to work through it. When Mendes sings "Sometimes I feel like giving up," and follows with, "But I just can't," it shows that he doesn’t want to call it quits, when the truth is, it sounds like the relationship has already ended.
The song itself sounds more rock-esque for Mendes, with more guitars and drums versus his usual acoustic sound heard on his previous albums. In an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Mendes expressed where he wanted to go with his sound, saying "I was like, I want to make a Kings of Leon record -- I want to go more rock." With the song debuting at number one as the first single for Mendes' upcoming third album, he is already on the right track for a successful year. Mendes is currently slated to perform the song on March 28th on The Late Late Show With James Corden.
While "In My Blood" is getting more attention since it's the first single off Mendes' third album, his second released track "Lost in Japan" is just as great. This upbeat, R&B ingrained song is clearly about meeting someone (possibly in Japan) and being so deeply in love with this person that you just want to travel to them.
In the song, Mendes sings, "I got an idea, and I know it sounds crazy, I just wanna see ya, oh I gotta ask. Do you got plans tonight? / I'm a couple hundred miles from Japan tonight. I was thinking I could fly to your hotel tonight." When Mendes sings this, it clearly shows the feeling of pinning for someone. With a sound similar to something Justin Timberlake would produce, it is definitely groovy, and 100% a love song to dance to at proms or weddings.
With both songs being so new, and both having such different feels, which one seems to resonate with you more? Let us know!
