CAT's "Strawberry Milkshake" is the Perfect Amount of Sweet
BY CLAIRE HUBBLE
Do you know that moment when a musician sings a lyric for the first time and you know it's instantly iconic? "When I drop you off, I'm gonna go get / A strawberry milkshake and a cigarette" is that instantly iconic line and comes from the sweet pop jam of the fall: "Strawberry Milkshake" by singer-songwriter CAT.
CAT is a "New Wave junkie who can't drink black coffee," according to her website, and her newest single definitely shows it -- minus the coffee part. "Strawberry Milkshake," released on September 28th, features all of the best things from an 80's pop song: heavy synths, an addicting beat, and even a guitar solo. All of the upbeat sonic elements contrast against the break-up lyrics of the song, taking another note from the 80's era. By the end of the song, you'll want to find some leg warmers, throw on neon eyeshadow, and leave the man you don't even have.
This is the first single CAT has released on Apple Music, but you can find her other songs on Soundcloud and Spotify, including the best cover of Lana Del Rey's "Video Games." This is the perfect song for CAT to cover because her vocals aren't like that of a normal pop star. As much as we all love artists like Ariana Grande and Camila Cabello, the distinctly high vocals of pop songs today can get old really fast.
Thankfully, we have singers like CAT, del Rey, and yes, Cher, who aren't afraid to sing way down low. CAT's range, as heard in the del Rey cover and "Strawberry Milkshake," is incredible and the way she switches from her chest voice into a higher, lighter sound is impressive for any singer, especially a young pop star.
With her bright, red hair, sultry voice, and New Wave beats, CAT is sure to be going places. Check out her newest single, "Strawberry Milkshake," available on Apple Music, Spotify, and Soundcloud.
