G-Eazy and Halsey Claim Their "2017 Bonnie and Clyde" Title with "Him & I"

This past Friday G-Eazy dropped yet another single from his upcoming album, The Beautiful and Damned, entitled, “Him & I.” Though G has been dropping singles sporadically prior to the December 15th release date of TBD, fans have been particularly eager to hear “Him & I.” Perhaps because G-Eazy’s new popstar girlfriend, Halsey, is featured on the romantic track.
“Him & I” chronicles the dramatic story of two devoted lovers as the “2017 Bonnie and Clyde” who are caught up in their destructive and “crazy” love. Both G-Eazy and Halsey have written about tumultuous relationships in the past, but have never collaborated. Now, after dating briefly, the pair have their music love-child out in the world (with both of their names in the songwriting credits).
G-Eazy and Halsey successfully merged their distinct sounds to create the hypnotic “Him & I” -- bound to be one of the most loved off the new album. Beneath a simple hip-hop beat that G-Eazy is familiar with, a creepy piano plays a tantalizing and eerie melody typical of Halsey. Though these rhythmic pieces are separate and stand well on their own, “Him & I” showcases the wonder that occurs when they are fused into one song. The song perfectly embodies the mysterious and dark vibes of The Beautiful and the Damned. Not only does the music construct these vibes, but the lyrics surrender to the tones.
At one point in the song G-Eazy raps, “Wouldn’t see the point of living on if one of us die”–– a fairly dramatic and gloomy twist to this love story. Halsey replies with the same level of dark sentiment later on in the bridge when she sings, “For you I’d take a life.” Clearly, both of the characters of the song are deeply infatuated in a relationship that is made up sex, drugs, and madness. It brings to question whether G and Halsey truly mirror the words they’re singing, or if it’s meant to feed into the theatrics of it all. Either way, the music video they released with the song only adds fuel to the fire that is their extremely public and seemingly wild relationship. In it, G-Eazy and Halsey take on the Lower East Side of New York City as they sing “Him & I.” There is enough kissing, playful smiles, and overall chemistry that allow listeners to visualize how both artists resemble the Bonnie and Clyde characters they were aiming for.
Without the video, the song still captures G-Eazy and Halsey as characters of their own love-crazed relationship. The tragic lyrics and the intense music combine to form a truly sexy song that not only spews darkness, but passion as well. After just one listen, the intensity of the relationship is felt. “Him & I” is a song that will have fans praying G-Eazy and Halsey continue to regard one another as romantic “ride or dies” and make more thrilling music in the process.
