Kate Spade Hosts "Interesting Women, Interesting Lives" Speaker Series at Rockefeller Center
BY MISKAT RAHMAN AND SABRINA SOOKNANAN
Only ten days into their opening, the Rockefeller Plaza Kate Spade store hosted the "Interesting Women, Interesting Lives" speaker series on Tuesday, November 14th from 6:30p to 8p. The event showcased a conversation between Kristen Naiman, Senior Vice President of Brand Creative at Kate Spade, and Rosie Perez, star of Kate Spade New York’s latest episode of #missadventure, about unapologetic femininity and the role of fashion in film.
Before the talk began, guests were greeted by a complementary glass of champagne and a plethora of friendly staff associates. Although the greater attention grabbers were SHINY, GLITTERY, and SPARKLY! The mesmerizing image of what can only be described as the entrance of a royal palace instantly puts you in awe of the new store. From exclusive New York-based products to top-of-the-line Kate Spade classics, the store was certainly a treasure chest for dedicated shoppers and brand lovers.
Once guests had a chance to look around the new store, they seated us and introduced the two fabulous women of the evening. Donning Kate Spade fashions from head to toe, Kristen Naiman and Rosie Perez launched into a dynamic conversation about what fashion was becoming for women and what some of Rosie’s experiences with fashion had been in the film industry. Rosie’s unique accounts as a person of color shed some light on some issues that women continue to face today such as the fashionable accuracy of a character, the pervasive hypersexuality in how women dress, the perceptions of wealth and fashion, and many other pertinent topics.
During the conversation, Kristen raises awareness with the notion that, "Clothing is language...you could use clothes to blend in or you could use clothes to stand out;” truly encompassing the totality of the meaning of clothing across the board for all genders. However, her status as a successful business woman in the fashion industry truly reflects her dedication not only to her brand, but also her passion for fashion. On the topic of success, Rosie talked about how she truly saw success not just defined in terms of a career, but in terms of a life. Happily married with a wonderful house, Rosie divulges how she has always viewed success as the construction of a home, and that is what she truly believes has given her happiness. When asked what else made up success for Rosie, she responded with a checklist of the following:
- Loving partner
- Loving family
- Loving friends
The conversation eventually took an emotional, yet another important direction when Rosie highlighted current-day issues like the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse scandal. She praised one of her close friends for speaking out about a similar experience and explained that it changed her life to come forward. Rosie declared, "We are in a new phase of women power. We have the right to shame our aggressors, to say no you can't do this anymore."
Towards the conclusion of the conversation, Rosie recounts a time when she was 9 years-old and one of her family members remarked on her clothing: “The way you dress — you dress like you’re smart — and I never forgot that.” Truly a memorable experience for both fashionistas and the not-so fashion-savvy alike, "Interesting Women, Interesting Lives" definitely created a much-needed dialogue about life, femininity, and most importantly: fashion.
